We Have a Box! | The Peanut Build Out

Since we last posted, we have made some major progress with Peanut. In early September we found an S-280 shelter up for auction on govplanet.com in Yermo, California. We made the decision that it was the right box for us based on its size, location, condition, and potential price. Thankfully we were able to win the auction at a very reasonable price, and started making moves to get it shipped to us. Shipping with the contractors that govplanet uses was very easy and shockingly painless. We plugged in our shipping address, and the desired arrival date, and they made it all happen very smoothly.

Originally the S-280 shelters were produced for the military to serve as mobile shelters, loaded onto varying vehicles, or trailers, and set up in the field to be used as things like communications shelters, or mechanical repair stations. Recently many people have been retrofitting them into campers, hunting cabins, or just general inexpensive structures.

Our box arrived on a semi-flatbed that was also trailering a HEMMTT. If only the driver would have left us with both…!

HEMMTT, Maybe the next build platform??

Just moments after getting the S-280 shelter loaded on to Peanut and held in place with ratchet straps.

We still have lots to figure out after receiving our S-280 shelter. The main one at the moment is how we will permanently attach the box to the bed of our truck but we are also considering making the box removable to keep our options open. We’ve got a few ideas for how the box will get mounted, but we’ll have to save that for another post.
